Professor Melvin Chen

Professor in the Practice of Piano, Yale School of Music
Director of the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival

Melvin Chen is Professor in the Practice of Piano at the Yale School of Music and Director of the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival–Yale Summer School of Music. A native of Tennessee, Dr. Chen has performed extensively as a soloist and chamber musician throughout the United States, Canada, and Asia, with performances featured on NPR, KBS, and NHK. He has appeared at major venues and festivals including the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, Bravo! Vail Valley Music Festival, Bard Music Festival, and Music from Angel Fire.

Chen previously served as Associate Director and on the piano faculty of the Bard College Conservatory of Music. He holds a doctorate in chemistry from Harvard University and double master's degrees in piano and violin from The Juilliard School. He earned a B.S. in chemistry and physics from Yale University, where he studied piano with Boris Berman.
